Liu Xiang is still a hero…
August 19th, 2008

So Liu Xiang got hurt and didn’t compete in the 110-meter hurdle and defend his gold medal from 4 years ago. I can see how most Chinese people are disappointed, shocked and sad. I don’t understand how some feel angry and betrayed though. The guy is hurt. He’s been under an incredible amount of pressure. And now he couldn’t compete in his event… who do you think feels the worst? That’s right…, he does.
I think in general Chinese people place too much in winning gold in the Olympics. I could understand the feeling back when China got nothing else to be proud of. But surely time has changed big time. It’s silly they haven’t changed their persective on the Games, yet. China no longer needs its athletes to win gold to get some name recognition…
Plus, now it’s just silly… Not many countries still train athletes with all the resources a country can give. This is actually not fair for the other countries who send athletes that are there on their own. Oh well… I guess the Chinese don’t quite understand what it means to play fair anyway.
Just ask about the two Chinese girls who are not yet 16 but competed in the Olympics anyway. The government is willing to cheat for them. Where’s any honor in that?
Anyway, back to my main point… I think Liu Xiang is still a hero. Shame on anyone who disagrees.
Lastly… Shame on the Taiwanese baseball team. They’ve played horribly… Talk about disappointed supporters!
